Mountain Village to host Comprehensive Plan Public Forum: The Economics of Mountain Village, Wednesday, June 16

As the Town of Mountain Village undergoes its Comprehensive Plan amendment process, the public is invited to tune into and participate in a special forum presenting the economic data that will be used to help inform any amendments eventually adopted.

On Wednesday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. representatives from MIG, the firm hired to facilitate the amendment process, will present the Comprehensive Plan Public Form: The Economics of Mountain Village at Mountain Village Town Hall.

The presentation will be an analysis of the Town of Mountain Village’s economic drivers that MIG’s economists have gathered through detailed records and data analysis. The public is invited to attend in person or tune in virtually. The forum will include a presentation from MIG’s team and the opportunity for questions and answers after the presentation. MIG is a national firm with extensive experience developing and updating comprehensive plans for resort communities to reassess portions of the Comprehensive Plan.

“The presentation will include a variety of data sets addressing economic and fiscal conditions for Mountain Village, with an emphasis on the hotbed inventory,” said Andrew Knudsten, managing principal for Economics & Planning Systems who performed the analysis for MIG.

“The purpose of the presentation is to enable elected officials and community stakeholders to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing Mountain Village, and to make informed decisions as Comprehensive Plan elements come together. Community input is vitally important. The staff and consultant team are prepared to both present and then listen for ways to calibrate the direction of the plan,” he added.

The Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2011, was written to be a 30-year roadmap envisioning the future use and needs of the community. Mountain Village Town Council's goal at the time was to encourage future development while controlling growth within reasonable boundaries.

However, since its adoption, Town Council and the community have noted that the plan is overly prescriptive and complicated in certain respects.

The data presented on Wednesday, June 16, and the public’s comments on the presentation, will be used during the public amendment process to the Comprehensive Plan. The forum will include economic analysis of the following items:

  • An analysis of retail sales activity in the Village Center.
  • Sales tax analysis and comparison over past years.
  • Town revenue analysis and employment trends.
  • Short-term rental occupancy analysis, with emphasis on the dispersed rental inventory.

“The economic landscape of Mountain Village has changed significantly since 2011,” said Planning and Development Services Director Michelle Haynes. “The economic analysis allows the community to see a snapshot of our economic progress and change. We look forward to sharing this information with the community.”

The public is invited to attend in person in Town Hall or tune in via Zoom. The presentation will be available to view on-demand afterwards and posted online at townofmountainvillage.com/comp-plan.
